Ever since John Boyd Dunlop invented the pneumatic tyre in 1888, his name has been synonymous with industry-leading technical development in tyres. A string of milestone innovations powered the growth of a global brand that rapidly became a household name.

It took one more year before his world-changing invention achieved its first race win – actually four wins in a day, by 1889 cycle racer Willie Hume. Ever since, Dunlop’s worldwide success in every major form of motorsport has gone hand in hand with the continuous progress of technology.

FORT DUNLOP – DUNLOP’S LANDMARK

John Boyd Dunlop not only gave the world the pneumatic tyre. The firm that took his name also gave Birmingham, UK, a proud landmark. Fort Dunlop. Although much of the factory site, established in 1917, has been redeveloped, Fort Dunlop is still the home of Dunlop Motorsport.

The Fort Dunlop plant now produces around 250,000 competition tyres a year. The range is enormous – from vintage road and race tyres to the latest state-of-theart car and motorcycle race tyres for Le Mans, DTM, Moto2, AMA – and tyres are exported to all corners of the world from Birmingham.

More than 300 people are employed at Fort Dunlop in research, development, manufacturing, engineering and commercial teams.
